Early career guidance to high school students.

When opposed to other curriculum fields, high school career education and instruction has traditionally received low priority and support. In several secondary schools, there is only one Career Advisor who is responsible for providing school-wide and timely career preparation and guidance to students in all year levels. With no formal experience or history, the Career Advisor has traditionally transitioned from a classroom teaching position into career education. Given that adolescents' career decisions are unique to them and are influenced by their personal circumstances and frames of reference, it would be beneficial to speak with them directly. This will ensure that the career education they are getting is important and up to date, and that it can be applied to their lives and futures in order to produce lifelong learners and professional career managers in a globalized world. Examining the skills, qualifications, and delivery methods of Careers Advisors will also be beneficial in determining whether students are providing the best possible career preparation and advice with the limited resources available to career workers.

If the ultimate aim is economic development, creativity, and competitiveness, or fostering social inclusion and reducing social and health inequality, finding avenues for young people to reach their full potential is a widely held political goal. To succeed in the global knowledge economy, many people from deprived backgrounds will need to pursue post-secondary education (apprenticeship, college, or university). Despite this, many people face obstacles in following their chosen career path. Lack of trust in the affordability of required educational pathways, limited access to knowledgeable professional advice, potential mentors, role models, or other information supports, decision-making reluctance, and prejudice are all factors that can stymie timely decision-making.

With today's plethora of job opportunities, career development has become more important than ever for determining one's career interests and options. Students must undergo career counselling in school in order to be properly prepared for life after high school, as well as the transition to adulthood and the workforce. More and more occupations are requiring some kind of post-secondary education, whether it's a technical credential, an associate's degree, a bachelor's degree, or something else entirely. When working with teenagers, career development is particularly beneficial and significant. Counsellors may assist students with their post-secondary goals and completion in a school environment. Counsellors typically educate students about their post-secondary opportunities and assist them with the application process. While counsellors are in a position to help and direct students with post-secondary preparation and readiness, it is not always easy. Counsellors are often overworked due to a high counsellor-to-student ratio, administrative responsibilities, and a lack of experience and training.
